A decorative wall rail, a guard at an elevated edge, and a fire escape serving as an exit do not carry the same responsibilities. Start by defining how the component will be used and which requirements apply. Nova Scotia’s Building Code Regulations address stairs, ramps, handrails, guards, and fire escapes, while provincial Fire Safety Regulations refer fire escapes used as exits back to the Building Code.<\/p>\n

Requirements vary with occupancy, building condition, location, and the adopted code edition. The project’s architect, engineer, or other responsible professional should establish the design criteria, loads, geometry, and connection requirements, with the authority having jurisdiction providing the required acceptance. A fabricator should work from that confirmed direction rather than copying dimensions from another building.<\/p>\n

Survey the building and access route<\/h2>\n

Existing walls, slabs, framing, openings, and grade conditions need to be measured and photographed. After installation, owners should keep access routes clear and monitor the condition of guards, handrails, treads, landings, fasteners, connections, and protective finishes. Coating damage, corrosion, impact, looseness, or movement should be assessed before it grows into a larger repair. Inspection and maintenance requirements should reflect the system, environment, and direction of the responsible building professionals.<\/p>\n
